There is still a lot of snobbery around the subject of cheap fizz but supermarket’s own brand wines and Champagnes have come a long way over the past few years and it’s worth pointing out that the grapes used are likely to have come from the same growers who supply the more prestige brands. For non-vintage Champagne there really is no reason why a budget bottle shouldn’t taste just as good as a Moet or Laurent-Perrier.
Waitrose are often singled out for praise by wine experts for the quality of their wares and this Champagne, which is made by Piper & Charles Heidsiec, is a good example why. Dominated with Pinot grapes and with a dash of Chardonnay this is a fresh tasting, smooth Champagne with a hint of zing that sets it apart from the rest.
Janice Robinson said: Rich, creamy lemon nose. Intense and fresh and very pure and zesty. Gold medal winner in the International Wine Challenge.
Decanter Magazine: Lovely clean floral and brioche notes on nose. Dry biscuity entry. Clean zesty fruit touches and integrated yeast. Very lively and refreshing aperitif style. Drink now.
